WVHN and Network partner, Coalfield Health Center, wraps up the 15-week FARMacy Program. This program is designed to provide fresh fruits and vegetables and nutrition and physical fitness education to patients managing diabetes.
According to the CDC, research shows that food and nutrition insecurity puts people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Adults who experience food and nutrition insecurity are 2 to 3 times more likely to have diabetes than people who do not experience food and nutrition insecurity.
We appreciate our committed participants who came every week to learn and, along the way, developed a community of support. This program would not be possible without the generous funding from Unicare, the thorough education from WVU Extension Services, and the beautiful produce from Sprouting Farms and Four Seasons Country Store. We are improving the health and wellness of the community together.
Those who completed the program received: A Crockpot, a Crockpot recipe book for diabetics, a blood sugar/activity/ food journal, a carb counter reference book, a food scale, measuring cups/spoons, water bottle, resistance bands, resistance band workout flashcards, pedometer, hydration sticks (drink mix), diabetic-friendly snack, gloves, blanket.
Fruits and vegetable consisted of Peppers, Potatoes, Carrots, Lettuce, Turnips, Squash, and Apples
